iPhone 15 or iPhone 16: where your money actually goes

These two devices are closer together than the difference in numbers suggests. They have the same size, the same connector, the same kind of screen and the same main camera. The difference lies in the chip, in two buttons, in one camera feature, in software that only works on the newer one, and in how long the device keeps getting updates. That is it, and that is exactly why for many people the choice should not fall on the model number but on storage and battery.

What is the same

• USB-C as the connector, so the same cable and the same adapters.
• The cut-out window at the top of the screen, with the same functions.
• A 48 megapixel main camera, with the ability to photograph at two times zoom without loss of quality.
• MagSafe and wireless charging, and therefore the same mounts and chargers.
• Size and weight are so close together that you do not feel it in the hand.

What the 16 has on top

A newer chip. In daily use you notice little of that: messages, maps, banking and social apps run smoothly on both. Where it does do something is with heavy games, with long video edits, and in the longer run: a faster chip keeps feeling smooth for longer as apps get heavier.

The new software features of Apple Intelligence. Those work on the 16 and on the 15 Pro, but not on the standard 15, and that will not change with an update. It is the only hard software difference between these two. Whether it is worth anything depends entirely on whether you are going to use those features; anyone who does not know usually does not use them.

An action button instead of the switch for silent and ring. You attach a function to it yourself: camera, torch, recording, a focus mode. Handy if you set it up, otherwise a matter of taste.

A separate camera control on the right-hand side. You open the camera and change settings without searching on the screen. Anyone who takes a lot of snapshots notices that every day; anyone who photographs twice a week does not.

An ultra-wide angle with autofocus. That is the real camera point: it makes macro shots from very close up possible. The standard 15 cannot do that. For anyone who photographs flowers, insects, parts or details that is a feature and not a detail.

Slightly more battery capacity and more working memory. The working memory is also the reason those software features run on the one and not on the other.

What you notice in practice

For calling, messages, maps, photos, banking and streaming these two devices feel the same, and that will stay that way in the coming years. The moments at which you notice the 16 are concrete: a macro shot, opening the camera quickly with the button on the side, a long session in a heavy game, and the new software features if you use them. Outside those moments you do the same things with both.

Software support

Apple does not announce an end date. In practice a device that came out a year later gets new iOS versions for about a year longer. If you are planning to use this device for five or six years, that is a reasonable argument for the 16. If you switch every two or three years, it is not an argument, because you will be long gone before that limit comes into view.

The battery weighs more heavily than the generation

A 15 with a fresh battery gets through a long day more easily than a 16 with a worn battery. With second-hand, then, the battery health is more important than the model number. With us every device has at least 85 per cent capacity or it gets a new battery, and that battery falls under the 24 months of warranty just like the device. That makes the comparison fairer: you are comparing two devices on what they do and not on what the previous owner did with them.

Storage is the more expensive difference

If for the same budget you can choose between a 16 with the smallest storage and a 15 with double, take the storage. A battery you can replace later, storage you cannot. What fills a device up is video and photos, and a full device is a device that feels slow, misses updates and skips backups. You notice that every week; the camera control of the 16 you do not.

Appearance and price

At many shops you still choose a grade here, and pay more for an example with fewer scratches. With us that choice does not exist: every device is given a new screen and a new housing in the workshop, so a 15 and a 16 are equally unblemished. The price difference is therefore entirely about generation and storage, and not about how careful the previous owner was. That makes the comparison simpler: a 15 with generous storage often costs less than a 16 with the minimum storage, and that is a difference you notice every day. Short advice

• If you are coming from a device four or five years old, both feel like a big step. Choose then on storage and price.
• If you photograph a lot from close up, or you want the new software features: the 16.
• If you want to keep the device as long as possible: the 16, for that extra year of updates.
• If you are looking for the best ratio between price and use today: the 15 with generous storage and a good battery.
